On March 22, Woodard & Curran received a Climate Change Adaptation & Resilience Business Achievement Award from the Climate Change Business Journal (CCBJ) during Environmental Business International’s Annual Environmental Industry Summit in San Diego. The award recognizes consulting and engineering firms who are advancing the way organizations prepare for the effects of climate change.

Woodard & Curran provides a critical mix of hazard mitigation and climate change adaptation services that help local governments and institutions develop comprehensive resiliency plans and, in many cases, secure the funding needed to fulfill those plans. Specific projects in 2016 that contributed to the firm winning this award included:

  • Completing a Hazard Mitigation Plan for all 17 Connecticut State Colleges & Universities campuses, which included securing funding from the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, interviewing more than 200 stakeholders, identifying more than 300 mitigation actions to address severe weather, and completing a vulnerability assessment to severe weather for critical infrastructure on all campuses.
  • Helping the City of Salem, MA secure a Coastal Protection Grant that will fund 75% of the cost to design and permit the replacement of a deteriorating concrete seawall at Forest River Park, further supporting the City’s efforts to upgrade its stormwater infrastructure and protect it from rising sea levels.
  • Completing a comprehensive climate assessment of Rhode Island’s 19 major wastewater treatment facilities for the RI Department of Environmental Management, which included a mix of modeling, historical data, and facility insights to identify adaptation strategies that would protect each facility’s most vulnerable and valuable systems from future climate change scenarios.

The Climate Change Business Journal explores the diverse and rapidly evolving markets for climate change risk assessment and adaptation and greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation, and is part of Environmental Business International, which serves all sectors of the environmental industry worldwide.
